Lucky bargain hunters with good timing had an opportunity to take home vintage 1960s furnishings from the “12 mile Yard Sale” Saturday in Hawkins County that would have made the set designer on “Mad Men” green with envy.
Hawkins County hosts two big events next Saturday Oct. 6 including the 19th annual 12-Mile Yard Sale on Clinch Valley Road along the northern base of Clinch Mountain; and the 3rd annual American Indian Gathering at the Amis Mill Historic Site near Rogersville.
“Technically the “12 Mile Yard Sale” in the rural Clinch Valley community of Hawkins County wasn’t supposed to start until around 8 a.m. But, event organizer and veteran junk seller Lee Hoellman said there were people out looking for bargains before sunrise.
Every year the first Saturday in October the lonely stretch of 2-lane highway that runs along the north base of Clinch Mountain attracts more than 100 sellers, and thousands of visitors looking for hidden treasure or bargains, or just an excuse to view the fall foliage.
